Dr. Harston joins Granger Medical Clinic after working in the Steward Health Care system for the last year. His childhood was spent in Tremonton Utah where his father worked as a small-town family physician. He moved to Guam for 4 years where he grew to love the ocean. He returned to Utah and attended Olympus High School in Holladay. He went on to graduate Summa Cum Laude from Brigham Young University. He met his wife while on a study-abroad trip to Israel and Egypt. He chose to do his medical training at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston TX; coincidentally he was born at a Baylor teaching hospital while his father was attending the same medical school.
Dr. Harston’s goal as a breast radiologist is not only to save lives through early detection of breast cancer but also to reduce anxiety, physical, and emotional pain at every level. This includes reducing anxiety that accompanies screening mammography by offering same-day results before women leave the clinic. It includes using a combination of techniques to reduce or eliminate pain and bleeding during needle biopsies and localizations. It includes teaching patients and providers what breast density is and how extremely dense breast tissue markedly decreases the sensitivity of standard mammography, but contrast-enhanced mammography can overcome those limitations.
After completing a Women’s Imaging fellowship Dr. Harston returned to Lackland Air Force base to serve as chief of breast imaging for 4 years at the medical center. Part of his responsibilities included teaching breast imaging to a total of 70 residents in the combined Air Force/Army radiology residency program. After an honorable discharge in 2011, he joined Lexington Clinic, a physician-owned multispecialty clinic in Lexington Kentucky. He was the only fellowship-trained breast radiologist in central Kentucky at that time. During his 10 years as director of the Lexington Clinic Center for Breast Care, he built a robust mammography program that included the identification of women at high risk for breast cancer and those with extremely dense tissue. He was the first in Kentucky to routinely offer these women contrast-enhanced mammography in addition to 3D mammograms.
He is married with 4 children. He loves mountain climbing with his family. They have almost finished climbing to the highest point in each state. 49 done. 1 to go (Alaska).
